Resident Information for Sunday 11th October 2026

 

Dear Residents/Businesses of Kinloch Rannoch and the surrounding area,

 

We are writing to provide you with information about the Rannoch Marathon and Half Marathon, which will take place on Sunday 11 October 2026.

 

We appreciate that a running event of this size will have an impact on local roads, and we want to make sure that residents understand when roads will be closed, when they will reopen, and how traffic will be managed throughout the event. The changes we are implementing are designed for your benefit as much as they are for the runners on the day. We want a safe and enjoyable event but we also want the local community to be impacted as little as possible. I can assure you, our aim is to keep disruption to a minimum while ensuring the safety of runners, residents and road users.

 

START TIMES on the day are:

Both races will start in Weller Poley Park, Kinloch Rannoch.

 

The marathon will travel anti-clockwise around Loch Rannoch, leaving Kinloch Rannoch and running past the Loch Rannoch Hotel and onwards towards the Bridge of Gaur (North shore Loch Rannoch).

 

The marathon route will then continue onto the south side of Loch Rannoch, passing Dall (old Rannoch School), Carie and Bunrannoch House before turning left on Schiehallion Road towards the Park where the races finish.

 

How the road closure will work:

The road closure will be managed progressively as the race passes through the area, rather than keeping all roads around Loch Rannoch closed for the duration of the event. A traffic management company will be on the route to manage the road closure and reopen the road after the runners have passes each section. There will be a lead vehicle ahead of the runners and a rear/sweep vehicle behind the last participants. This means that the period during which each section of road is affected will be relatively limited.

 

North side of Loch Rannoch

The marathon will travel along the north side of Loch Rannoch before crossing towards the south side.

The north side of the loch is scheduled to reopen from approximately 12:30pm in full (see attached timetable for full details (Appendix 1). Once the north-side section has been cleared and it is safe to do so, normal traffic will be able to resume.

 

South side of Loch Rannoch

The south side will remain closed while the marathon and half marathon participants are using this section of the course. However, the closure will move with the race. The roads will re-open on the South shire, in a clockwise direction (e.g. access Kinloch Rannoch via Bridge of Gaur and the north shore road before the South side is fully opened). Once the rear/sweep vehicle has passed a particular location, that section of road will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.

 

This means that residents and road users on the south side will not necessarily remain affected until the end of the race. The road closure will progressively move around the loch behind the final runners.

What this means for residents

We ask residents to please be aware of the following on Sunday 11th October 2026:

• Please allow extra time for journeys during the morning (see recommended times (Appendix 1)
• If you need to travel during the event, please consider the race route and plan your journey accordingly.
• Please follow the instructions of marshals, traffic management personnel and event vehicles (they are there to help you).
• Do not attempt to drive through the closed section while runners are on the road without a Race Pass (which is available from registering at https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/2SEicudEXi
• Once the sweep vehicle has passed and the road has been confirmed safe to reopen, normal traffic will resume.
• Please take particular care when roads are being reopened, as runners, cyclists, marshals and support vehicles may still be nearby.
• EMERGENCY ACCESS WILL BE MAINTAINED
• Access can be arranged if it is essential and arranged in advance using the link above. We will get in touch with affected individuals/businesses and make arrangements where required.

 

Why the closures are necessary

The road closures are required to provide a safe environment for participants and to allow the event to take place on the public road network safely.

 

With marathon and half marathon runners travelling around Loch Rannoch, it is important that runners are protected from passing traffic and that emergency access can be maintained throughout the event.

 

We have designed the traffic management arrangements to ensure that roads are reopened progressively wherever possible, rather than remaining closed unnecessarily.

The Rannoch Marathon is intended to showcase Kinloch Rannoch and the beautiful Loch Rannoch area to runners and visitors from across Scotland, the rest of the UK and beyond.

 

We are committed to working with the local community to make the event as well managed and considerate to residents as possible.

 

Our policy is to be sustainable, promoting car-sharing, shuttle bus use, no single use plastic, caring for the environment and respecting the local community. We are making donations to the Weller Poley Park, the Rannoch Community Trust, Georgetown Hall and the Weller Poley Park to benefit the whole community around the Loch.

Rannoch Marathon 2026 – Resident FAQs

The Rannoch Marathon and Half Marathon take place on Sunday 11 October 2026, starting from Weller Poley Park in Kinloch Rannoch. The marathon starts at 9:30am and the half marathon at 9:45am.

 

Why do the roads need to be closed?

• Temporary road closures are needed to provide a safe route for runners and to reduce the risk of conflicts between runners and vehicles. Both events use public roads around Loch Rannoch, with the marathon travelling around the loch and the half marathon using the south shore.
• The closures are intended to be temporary and managed progressively, rather than keeping every affected road closed throughout the whole event.

 

How long will the roads be closed?

• There is not one single closure period for the whole Loch Rannoch area. Different sections are affected at different times as the races progress.
• The organiser's published traffic information states that access to the south side remains open until approximately 9:20am, while access on the north side also remains open until approximately 9:20am.
• Residents should therefore plan ahead if they need to travel before the race begins.

 

When will the roads reopen?

• Roads will be reopened progressively as the race passes through each section.
• The event traffic plan uses a lead vehicle and a rear/sweep vehicle to manage the race. Once the final runners have passed a particular section and it is safe for traffic to resume, that section can be reopened.
• The organiser currently indicates that the north side of Loch Rannoch is scheduled to reopen from approximately 12:30pm.
• Please remember that reopening times can be affected by the actual progress of the race and by safety considerations on the day.

 

Will the whole Loch Rannoch road be closed all day?

• No. The intention is to manage the closure around the moving race rather than unnecessarily closing every section for the entire morning.
• The published traffic plan gives specific opening times before the race and a timetable for the subsequent reopening of sections.

 

How will traffic be managed?

• Traffic management will include marshals and event personnel positioned along the route, together with race vehicles.
• Please follow instructions from marshals and any temporary signs or traffic-control arrangements. Do not drive through a section that is currently closed, even if you can see that there are gaps between runners.

 

What if I need to leave my property during the closure?

• If you know that you will need to make a journey, please plan it in advance and allow extra time.
• Where possible, make your journey before the relevant closure begins or wait until the road has reopened. What about emergency access?

• Safety arrangements are in place for the event, including first aid provision. The event organisers should be contacted in advance about any specific access requirement that could be affected by the road closures.
• In an emergency, always call 999.

 

Can pedestrians still use the roads?

• Residents should take care around the race route and follow instructions from marshals. Even where a road is not fully closed, runners, support vehicles and other event activity may be present.
• Please do not enter a closed section on foot unless directed to do so by event personnel.

 

Can I park on the road?

• Please avoid parking on or immediately alongside the race route if possible, particularly where doing so could obstruct runners, emergency vehicles or traffic-management operations.
• Keeping roads and passing areas clear will help the event team reopen roads as quickly and safely as possible.

 

What should I do when a road reopens?

• Please drive carefully and follow the directions of marshals and traffic-management staff. A road may have only just reopened, so there could still be runners, cyclists, pedestrians or event vehicles nearby.

 

Will local businesses and services still be accessible?

• The organisers are aiming to minimise disruption by managing the closures progressively. However, access will vary depending on where you are located and the timing of the race.
• If you are running a business or have guests arriving on the day, please advise them in advance about the event and encourage them to allow additional time for their journey.
